Oldtimer
Pictures below
This plane I picked up from a friend and will be
using it for a camera platform. It is a 3 channel Great
Planes Oldtimer. The wing is 73 inches (735 sq in
surface area).
ENGINE: I've got
an OS Surpass Four Stroke .52 engine on it and it purrs right along.
I'm still in the tweaking stage at this point. I'm running a 11.5
x 6 prop but will be changing to the recommended 11 x 5 soon to see the
difference. This thing is a gas miser. Several times I
brought it in thinking I would be low on fuel and had more than enough
left in the tank. It is handy with the windows in the side
of the fuselage. You can contort just a bit and see your fuel
level.
RADIO: I'm using a
Futaba 6 channel 2.4 GHZ FASST radio. I picked up another
receiver for this plane. The receiver and battery are velcro'd
into place in the HUGE radio compartment. 3 standard servos.
Elevator, Rudder, Throttle. I am going to see if
I can mix my aileron and rudder so I can control the aileron function
with the rudder as well because taxi'ing on the ground is very
unsettling to me using the aileron function to steer.
WHEELS: I
hate my wheels. I messed up the wheel pants that came with
this. Flying at my house field, wheel pants aren't really a
great idea anyway. The wheels I have on there are scale Biplane
wheels I pulled off a biplane I had. I painted the hubs to match
the plane. They are too thin for this landing gear.
I need some balloon tires for this thing.
CAMERA: Originally
I had intended to put a camera in the fuselage on the left side of the
plane (The clean side). But the four stroke throttle linkage will
be preventing that. The camera I ordered is small and I have
seen many pictures of people flying with the camera velcro'd to the side
of the plane. So that is what I will be doing as well.
I want to get the camera forward of the wing for pictures so the wing
does not get into the pictures. I can move the battery in
the compartment around for weight distribution though the camera does
not weigh much. The link to the camera I ordered is
HERE
FLYING: Its'
a 3 channel, so it is a bit different without the ailerons.
But this thing can fly nice. It will slow down so much its'
almost scary. My first 4 flights were without any wind.
The last flight had about a 2 mph wind. I dead sticked it once
when I pulled throttle too much (still need to tweak that too).
Perfect for a camera platform!!! The OS four stroke will pull this
thing vertical for quite awhile before it will stall out. Stalls
are gentle. But with the large amount of rudder I have in it,
I can kick it over into a nice hammerhead. It takes off in
10 feet at half throttle with no wind!!! Pretty cool. I have
to thank my freind Ed as he built the plane. I covered all but the
tail and installed the engine/radio, etc.
YET TO DO:
Change out the wheels. Get a prop hub/spinner. Mount
the camera.
I'll post photos when I get them.
